Sunbeam Updater – Captain Says, “Progress is Being Made”

Sunbeam Updater – Captain Says, “Progress is Being Made”

BAR HARBOR, ME — Over the weekend, Sunbeam V Captain Michael Johnson sent photo updates on the boat’s routine major refit:

The final coat of epoxy has been applied and new bilge plumbing is being installed in the accommodation section. The floor will hopefully be fitted next week. Progress is being made!

John Armstrong is responsible for all the sandblasting on the Sunbeam V — an extensive and difficult job.  When John emerges from the bilge with his suit and helmet the boat could be mistaken for Sunbeam XV being serviced at a Starfleet facility.

Special Times and People on Isle au Haut

Special Times and People on Isle au Haut

BAR HARBOR, ME — The Mission boat, Sunbeam V, is never better loved, perhaps, than when island communities gather for companionship and a meal inside the Sunbeam salon. Sunbeam Steward Jillian always has delicious food to offer. Jillian’s meals, in turn, are often enhanced by homemade dishes brought aboard the Sunbeam by islanders.

With the Sunbeam V out of the water for a routine major refit, the Sunbeam crew chose to keep alive the gatherings for conversation and food in new places among the islands.

Island Health Services Director Sharon Daley, RN this week snapped some photos this week of “Taco night at the Parsonage on Isle au Haut” really capturing the spirit of celebration.

“Good to be together,” said Sharon. “Special times and people telling wonderful stories and memories and building more.”

HARRINGTON — Last month at Narraguagus Junior/Senior High School, seven teens, assisted by teachers and community volunteers, were hard at work building a new garden on a corner of the campus. The effort was part of Teen Ag week. The six-day program was a collaborative effort between Healthy Acadia and Narraguagus’s Future Farmers of America chapter and their Food Justice League.

Volunteers tilled 1,600 square feet of vegetable garden to create the Mary Endre Memorial Garden in memory of a teacher at the school who passed away last fall from cancer.

As part of the program…[f]ield trips to Incredible Edible Milbridge community gardens, Folklore Farm and the Maine Seacoast Mission’s food pantry as well as a visit by Maine Outdoor School rounded out the week.

The students’ final project was a community meal served to 60 people at the Downeast Table of Plenty, a weekly community meal hosted by the Maine Seacoast Mission.
