PBS News Hour recently visited the Mission’s Downeast to learn about our work with food security. PBS’s interview and filming at the Downeast Campus informed a longer tv segment airing this past weekend, “How work requirements for social security programs impact people in need.”

BAR HARBOR, ME – Our Downeast Campus in Cherryfield includes a quarter-acre organic vegetable garden. Volunteers from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners program work with Mission staff to grow more than 2,000 pounds of produce annually for our food programs.
We hope to impact area residents’ eating habits, including the next generation’s habits, in order to create a stronger, healthier, and more informed community.
Thank you for considering Maine Seacoast Mission’s Foord Programs this #GivingTuesday.

Nancy and guitar. (Photo courtesy Marilyn Nickson)
Cherryfield, ME — The Mission’s June 6 Facebook post opened with: ‘Guitar Lost in House Fire, Seeking Replacement.’ Marilyn Nickson, Downeast Campus Community Coordinator, wondered if someone had “a guitar out there in good condition that might find a home” with an 80-year old woman who “lost everything some time ago in a house fire,” including her “prize possession” guitar.
Well, an secret angel with a guitar and a kind heart had a guitar for the woman we now know is Nancy.
Marilyn Nickson reconnected with Nancy a few days ago. “She was so happy! She’s been playing [guitar] since she was 15, she tells me. She wanted to thank the donor,” Marilyn said in an email accompanying this photo.
Thank you, as well, on behalf of Maine Seacoast Mission.

Cherryfield, ME — Photo and note from the Mission Downeast Campus Caretaker Scott Shaw:
This is Gavin Beal For his 7th birthday Gavin wanted to have his friends bring food to his party, instead of gifts, for people who did not have anything to eat! This very cool young man and his mom, Christen Beal of Cherryfield, ME came in to donate to the Mission’s Downeast Campus food pantry.
