Jillian’s Roadside Inspiration – How Can We Do Good Today?

Jillian’s Roadside Inspiration – How Can We Do Good Today?

CHERRYFIELD, ME — Jillian, who serves as Steward aboard the Sunbeam, and is quite active in Mission activities at our Downeast Campus, has also a soft spot for uplifting quotes on road signs. In fact, the Weald Bethel Community Center inner walls on the Downeast Campus were once adorned with an exhibit of Jillian’s photo collection of road sign inspirations.

“This sign lives in the center of our 1/2 mile strip of downtown Cherryfield on the lawn of the Legion,” wrote Jillian. Hearing Mission President John Zavodny speak this bit of inspiration, Jillian added them to this sign and snapped a photo.

Nice work. Thank you, Jillian.

Mission works to keep islanders connected, safely

BAR HARBOR — In some ways, residents of unbridged island communities are ahead of the curve with the changes brought by the virus epidemic, since they already rely on remote and online connections for important services.

But in other ways, they’re especially vulnerable.

On March 13, the team of Maine Seacoast Mission staff that usually visits islands aboard the Sunbeam (or this year, the replacement Moonbeam while work is being done on the bigger boat) decided to suspend their regularly scheduled visits.

“Each island community has asked that people not come out to the islands (so they can) make the best use of what limited resources they have on the island,” said Doug Cornman, director of island outreach and chaplain. So we want to honor that … If people start to not feel well, this would decimate an island.”

Mission Adopts Drive-Thru Plan for Food Security Programs

Mission Adopts Drive-Thru Plan for Food Security Programs

CHERRYFIELD, ME — Food security is a key focus of Maine Seacoast Mission . The Mission’s Food Pantry and Senior Commodities program are always buzzing with activity, ensuring the neighbors we serve have fresh, healthy food.

As a “distancing” precaution against COVID-19, Mission Director of Service Programs Wendy Harrington and her co-workers, came up with an alternative “drive-thru” concept. Food Pantry and Senior Commodities participants called in their orders ahead of time. Volunteers prepared food orders. Participants arrived in their cars and, directed by Jillian’s new hand-painted sign, drove up to a volunteer who delivered the food orders to the cars.

Nicely done. Onward and upward! Learn more about the Mission’s work with food.

MATINICUS ISLAND, ME — Sunbeam V Steward Jillian took these photos recently while on a Mission trip to Matinicus, which is 22 miles at sea from the mainland.

Jillian writes, “Boy, was it a fun night on Matinicus playing bingo together after taco feast. In one photo, Josh takes a turn at calling out bingo numbers.

For prizes, we all brought gift wrapped items from our lives that we wanted to find a good home. Austin is thrilled to have gotten this snazzy skull mug.”
