Family-Friendly Events on the Downeast Campus

Join the Mission for family-friendly activities every Saturday, starting April 11, this spring. These events will continue every Saturday until May 16. Mission staff will host different activities each week including outdoor activities, art activities, and more. These events are geared towards children and their families. Snacks and lunch will also be provided for attendees

“We are excited to offer these fun, educational events for the whole family on our Downeast Campus,” shares Downeast Director Monica Olivares. They’re a wonderful way for families to spend a Saturday together.” 

On Saturday, April 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., families are invited to join artist Maeve Perry for a paint-a-gnome event. This is a drop-in workshop where attendees can paint polymer clay gnomes for the home or garden. Paint-a-gnome kits available on a first come first serve basis. 

On Saturday, April 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., families are invited for an outdoor exploration day. Join Haley Estabrook, a Registered Maine Guide from Maine Outdoor School, for a morning of outdoor fun. Make trail mix, learn to identify animal signs, and go on a nature scavenger hunt. Attendees have the opportunity to win outdoorsy prizes. This is a joint program with Women for Healthy Rural Living. 

On Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. attendees can help beautify the Mission’s trails during a service day for the whole family. Projects will last from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by a lunch with outdoor games from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

Then there will be a special Friday climbing day on Friday, May 8 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Mission’s challenge course. This event is open to all climbers of all abilities and ages. Closed toe shoes required to climb on the course. Participants climbing on the course must sign a liability waiver, and each minor’s form must be signed by their legal guardian. In the event of rain, there is a rain date of Friday, May 16.  

On Saturday, May 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. join author and illustrator Nicole DeBarber for a story time for her book Native Bees. There will also be pollinator activities and games. This event is geared towards elementary school aged students. Native Bees was made possible by the Maine Arts Commission.  

The final spring event will be on Saturday, May 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the Maine Discovery Museum. Learn more about the beauty of math through Meaningful Math games and activities. This event is designed to spark curiosity and confidence in mathematics. 

These events are geared towards all ages, unless noted otherwise. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. These event will happen at the EdGE Center, 7 Weald Bethel Lane in Cherryfield. For questions about these events call (207) 546-4466 or email [email protected]
