Housing Rehab Program Going Forward

Housing Rehab Program Going Forward

Housing Rehabilitation Program Manager Scott Shaw

CHERRYFIELD, ME — Earlier this year, Housing Rehabilitation Manager Scott Shaw wrote with a “heavy heart,” a letter to year 2020 Housing Rehab volunteer groups. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Scott said, Maine Seacoast Mission was not providing stay over accommodations for Housing Rehab volunteer groups this season. This year, for safety’s sake, volunteers should stay home, said Scott.

The 2020 Housing Rehab program, however, is still going forward in a modified version. You might say we’ve rebuilt the Housing Rehab program. Temporarily.

Houses and mobile homes in Washington County are often old and hard to heat, especially on limited budgets. Through the Mission’s Housing Rehabilitation program we normally fix or rebuild twenty houses a year. Repairs and renovations range from painting to insulated mobile home skirting to new roofs.

In a normal season, this very worthwhile work is done primarily by our great volunteers from all over the country. This summer, without these traveling volunteers, Housing Rehab is focusing on homeowner applicants who have their own help available — family, friends — to do the home improvement tasks, as well as some local volunteers. Housing Rehab will vet the projects and supply the building materials. We look forward to working with households to make needed improvements to their homes!

Food Pantry Receives Fresh Milk Deliveries from Shaw’s, Walmart

CHERRYFIELD, ME — Downeast Campus Facilities Manager Scott Shaw sent a photo this morning and a note of explanation. “I just picked up a second round of milk from Shaw’s this morning. Headed to Walmart for more! We had a load on Monday, another today, and the grocers told me to come back tomorrow.

“We will wait until next Monday. I think Washington County will be good until then,” said Scott Shaw.

A big THANK YOU to both Walmart and Shaw’s for their help keeping the Mission Food Pantry well-stocked with good food for the people we serve.

Downeast Maine Tiny House Project Moves Forward in Winter

CHERRYFIELD, ME — Winter in Maine changed the pace of the Downeast Maine Tiny House Project. While the pace slowed, it never stood still.

The Tiny House Project blog just posted an update with videos from the carpentry class at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School at work. In this video, Sophomore students are installing dry wall and final courses of roof shingles.

CHERRYFIELD, ME — The Mission’s Housing Rehabilitation Program and its years old collection of Housing Rehab volunteers signatures is retiring.

“Unfortunately, our Housing Rehabilitation Program box truck has reached the end of its service,” said Housing Rehab Program Manager Scott Shaw.

“Our truck will take with it to the great rehab project in the sky, all of our Housing Rehab volunteer signatures starting in 2016. Maurice Tenney, the Housing Rehab Progrom Assistant came up with this wonderful idea many years ago. Hopefully this volunteer signature collecting tradition continues the with the box truck replacing her,” said Scott.

CHERRYFIELD, ME — We’re hard at work on our Downeast Maine Tiny House Project. Maine Seacoast Mission’s Scott Shaw is busy keeping the job-site clean and clear of snow. The veteran receiving this tiny house is also working hard to keep the site clear.

Assabet students are diligently working on the house in Massachusetts.

We are still looking for more sponsors. If you’re interested in teaming up with a great group of partners, please contact Scott Shaw or Bobbi Ann Harris. We welcome materials or funds. This house is possible thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our sponsors, and the donated time from many of our contractors.

Downeast Maine Tiny House Project Foundation Completed

Downeast Maine Tiny House Project foundation.

CHERRYFIELD, ME — The Downeast Maine Tiny House Project foundation in Milbridge is complete. John Goodwin is amazing and has gone above and beyond for all of the site work and working with the other contractor timelines. Now, the foundation needs to be protected from the foul weather until the Tiny House home is delivered. A carpenter will arrive this weekend and enclose the exposed foundation. The future military veteran homeowner, Ryan, agreed to keep the foundation clear of snow shove.

I will keep the property plowed out and clear for when the crane and trailer arrive. This pilot project was way above our original scope. We have learned so much from the process. The next one will be a piece of cake!
