Curtis and Patricia Blake Foundation makes final gifts to five organizations in Maine and Florida. The late Friendly Ice Cream founder’s posthumous generosity is extended to groups in communities he loved.

(Northeast Harbor, ME and Hobe Sound, FL, November 16, 2020) – Trustees of the Curtis and Patricia Blake Foundation have announced that four Mount Desert Island (Maine) nonprofits, and one Florida-based organization, are the five recipients of the family foundation’s final gifts, as part of the Blake’s estate plan, in recognition of those groups’ contributions to communities that mattered deeply to the family. Lifelong New Englander Curtis Blake was the legendary co-founder, with his brother Prestley, of Friendly Ice Cream 85 years ago this year.

The Land and Garden Preserve (Mount Desert Island); the Maine Seacoast Mission; the Mount Desert Nursing Association; the Northeast Harbor (ME) Neighborhood House; and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Martin County (FL) are the beneficiaries of gifts totaling $575,000.

Explained Curtis’s daughter and gift administrator Susan Blake, “The Blake family had many happy times on the Island of Mount Desert in the summertime and in Hobe Sound, Florida during the winter months. These final gifts represent an opportunity to give back once more to those communities, and to the year-round residents and groups who make those communities such special places.

Leaders of the organizations expressed their gratitude.

John Zavodny, President of Maine Seacoast Mission, noted that the timing of the gift, just as the organization’s social-outreach vessel, Sunbeam, is heading back into service to the islands of downeast Maine, is meaningful; the Blakes were honorary chairs of the 2018 campaign that supported the ship’s extensive refit. This gift was given in honor of longtime Blake family friend Scott McFarland.

Curtis Blake died in 2019 at the age of 102. His wife Patricia had predeceased him in 2018.

Summed up Susan Blake, “Although my father achieved great wealth during his life, his family was of modest means. He and his brother started Friendly Ice Cream in the middle of the Great Depression, another devastating time for our country. Dad’s success truly was built one five-cent ice cream cone at a time. Just as the people of Springfield, Massachusetts helped the Blake brothers to build their business, these gifts are intended to assist those doing much-needed work for the betterment of all.”

It’s Thank you Thursday for Neighbors Meg and Bob

It’s Thank you Thursday for Neighbors Meg and Bob

It’s Thank you Thursday. Today’s shout out of Mission love goes to DETOP participants Meg and Bob.

Sunbeam steward Jillian is eager to thank Downeast neighbors Meg and Bob for, over the years, always wanting to share produce with her, and at the Mission Downeast Table of Plenty (DETOP) community supper.

Before Covid-19, every Sunday afternoon, the Weald Bethel Community Center was alive with great food and great company of people of all walks of life, of all ages. Each Sunday meal was hosted by volunteers such Meg and Bob. We look forward to the post-Covid-19 world when we can resume our celebratory DETOP suppers.

“On my recent Sunday visit to their little homestead on the edge of the beautiful blueberry barrens,” said Jillian, “Meg sent me off with deliciously aromatic freshly dried sweet marjoram and summer savory from her garden for cooking in the Sunbeam Galley.”

Thank you Thursday – Carroll Drug Store, Jensen’s Pharmacy Going the Extra Mile

Thank you Thursday – Carroll Drug Store, Jensen’s Pharmacy Going the Extra Mile

It’s Thank you Thursday. Today’s shout out of Mission love goes to Carroll Drug Store in Southwest Harbor, and Jensen’s Pharmacy in Rockland ME for “going the extra mile” while helping Island Services Director Sharon Daley, RN do her work among Maine island communities.

“Both small local pharmacies have been so helpful to me through the years,” said Sharon Daley. “Getting flu vaccine for the islands would have been impossible without their help.

“I have called both pharmacists — who are always very busy — with questions about patient medications. Often I’m calling about patients who aren’t getting their medication at the pharmacies. Still, both pharmacies, without fail, take time to answer our questions,” she said.

“They also understand the difficulty of getting your medications on an island and do their best to help,” continued Sharon. “I really appreciate their willingness to help and for going the extra mile in all they do for their customers and for me.”

MCHT provides statewide conservation leadership through its work with land trusts, coastal communities and other partners.

MCHT and the Maine Seacoast Mission’s EdGE program have been partnering for over nine years to bring outdoor recreational opportunities to students in Washington County.

Over the years, the programming has ranged from hiking during the afterschool program, weekend activities, outing clubs, and opportunities to explore the MCHT preserves during summer camps. The MCHT stewards that work with the students have always been great at sharing their love of nature with the students.

Thank you to all the MCHT stewards who have been involved in helping bring the appreciation of the outdoors to the children of Washington County.
