2025 Spring Bulletin: The Mission will Always Be There

by | May 15, 2025 | News

In the Spring 2025 issue of the Bulletin, the Mission reflects on a promise made 120 years ago to always be there. When Angus and Alexander MacDonald started the Mission, they sailed up and down the Maine coast in all types of weather to call on families living in isolated areas of the coast and islands.

Your gift to the Maine Seacoast Mission makes you part of all we do.

And the Mission has not stopped working to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health. Mission President John Zavodny writes in his letter, “For well over a century, as other organizations and well-intentioned people have come and gone, the Mission has kept its promise to some of the most isolated communities in Maine. Through two pandemics, two world wars, cultural revolutions, and 21 presidential administrations, the Mission has stood with our coastal and island neighbors.”

The feature story looks at the impact of four programs: EdGE, Scholarships, Island Health, and Food Security. These programs are designed to help people thrive where they are and where they want to be. Featured throughout the story are three videos featuring a former EdGE parent and two Scholarship recipients who talk about what the programs have meant to them. There is also information about some of the donors and foundations that make these integral programs possible.

The Bulletin also introduces readers to the Mission’s newest program the Outer Islands Teaching & Learning Collaborative (TLC). The TLC, which has been supporting island teachers and students for 15 years, was most recently a part of Island Institute until it became clear that the Mission had the structure in place to expand the education component of island services. Also included is an interview with one of the Mission’s partners who helps bring important medical services to island residents.

Readers are also invited to this year’s Sunbeam Award Gala which will honor the Cornelia Cogswell Rossi Foundation and the Sunrise County Economic Council for their commitment to the communities the Mission serves.
