From the Galley with Siobhan: Trivia Night on Frenchboro

How well do you know your South American capitals? What was the name of the first James Bond novel? How many perfect games have been thrown in MLB history? Frenchboro residents and the Sunbeam crew tested their trivia knowledge recently in a friendly competition at the church.

Your gift to the Maine Seacoast Mission makes you part of all we do.

Over the last few months, I have been happy to add the role of Sunbeam Triviamaster to my job description. I take real pleasure in scouring the internet and combing through atlases and old editions of Trivial Pursuit in order to put together games that have a good blend of subjects and walk the line between enjoyably challenging and enragingly obscure.

One of the best parts about a trivia contest is that everyone brings different strengths to the team, and you often end up with a new respect for your teammates and the reservoirs of esoteric knowledge that you otherwise might never have known they possessed.

The evening on Frenchboro began with a potluck. We loaded up our plates with salad and pasta and deviled eggs and chili-cheese fries and sat at picnic tables outside, taking advantage of the warm weather. There was a blend of familiar year-round faces, newly returned seasonal residents, and a gentleman who just bought a house on the island this spring. It was nice to catch up with folks after what felt like a long, quiet winter. After we ate, everyone moved inside to tables set up in the sanctuary, and the game began. There were three teams of five or six people each—Team AARP, Team OMG, and the Kingfishers. The competition was fierce and the laughter loud. Certain answers were challenged and adjudicated, and half points were awarded. When the dust settled after five rounds, though, we had a clear winner: Team AARP, with their collective wisdom, came in first by a mile.
