Thank you Thursday to Brien Davis, NP at Hope Health

It’s Thank you Thursday. Today’s shout out of Mission Love goes to Nurse Practitioner Brien Davis and his Hope Health clinic in Camden, ME.

Mission Island Health Services Director Sharon Daley, RN nominated Brien Davis because “he is so good to work with. I called him twice in the last few days for help with two lobstermen with no doctor, no insurance.” Brien’s appointment calendar was booked solid, but he saw both lobstermen.

“Brien understands how difficult it is for someone on an island to get off for medical care. I can count on him and his staff to help when there is someone who needs medical attention,” said Sharon Daley. “He is not only an excellent practitioner, he’s understanding, figures out ways to make things work, and adjusts as needed.

“When I am on an island and need someone seen quickly Brien and staff make it happen. I am so grateful for the support and help they give me and the islanders,” said Sharon.

Thank you Thursday to Mano en Mano

Thank you Thursday to Mano en Mano

It’s Thank you Thursday. Today’s shout out of Mission Love goes to Milbridge, ME based Mano en Mano (Hand in Hand).

Founded in 2005, Mano en Mano works with farm-workers and immigrants to help them thrive in Maine. The organization’s work includes partnerships with Maine Seacoast Mission.

Mission Service Program Director Wendy Harrington said, “We began working with Mano en Mano in the early days of the Mission’s EdGE program when they helped us support the English language learner students in the after-school program.”

This year, starting with a $10K Good Shepherd Food Bank grant to support distributing culturally-specific boxes of food for local families and for migrant workers, Mano en Mano partnered with the Mission, Vazquez Mexican Takeout Restaurant, and Downeast Community Partners. Using the Mission Downeast Campus Food Pantry as a central location the team distributed 165 boxes of food to 347 people.

“It..was so helpful having this partnership [and] great to provide food for families. Now they feel comfortable picking up food there,” said Mano en Mano migrant education director Juana Rodriguez-Vazquez.

Mission Service Program Director Wendy Harrington added, “This year our work with Mano en Mano has become more integrated around food security, financial support for people in the community, and the new housing initiative.”

Thank you Thursday to Downeast Community Partners

Thank you Thursday to Downeast Community Partners

It’s Thank you Thursday and today’s shout out of Mission Love goes to Downeast Community Partners (DCP).

DCP was created in 2017 with the merger of two organizations: Washington Hancock Community Agency and Child and Family Opportunities. With headquarters in Ellsworth and Machias, the new DCP was, and is, designed to improve the quality of life and reduce the impact of poverty in Downeast communities.

For years DCP and the Mission have partnered to keep families and individuals in Washington and parts of Hancock County in safe, warm homes. Each year, area residents can apply for a housing repair assist.

In brief, the Mission’s Housing Rehabilitation Program, with its talented, hardworking volunteers, puts homes into shape — trailer skirting, roofing, building decks, scraping and painting, and other repair work. DCP then completes the work with its weatherization program: insulation, thermal windows, new doors.

And Monday, August 3, DCP and the Mission were on site in Milbridge to see its latest Downeast Maine Tiny House Project — in partnership with C.F. Adams Charitable Trust and Assabet Valley Regional High School — placed on its concrete foundation.

We’re looking forward to many more years teaming up with Downeast Community Partners.

It’s Thank you Thursday for Bayside Shop ‘n Save

It’s Thank you Thursday for Bayside Shop ‘n Save

It’s Thank you Thursday and today’s shout out of Mission Love goes to the retail supermarket Bayside Shop ‘n Save in Milbridge.

Ask Mission staff working throughout the front lines of any and all of our food security services and programs. Their responses are always glowing and succinct. Case in point: Jillian, who is a powerhouse with food activities at our Downeast Campus, Cherryfield, says of Bayside Shop ‘n Save’s work with the Mission: “Bayside Shop ‘n Save has a strong commitment to our local community and donates surplus produce and bakery items every week. They rock.”

The past several months, when Covid-19 fallout caused our Food Pantry customers to more than double, Bayside never flinched. Their commitment to their community kept pace with increased demand.

Whether it is providing great tasting food for the popular Downeast Table of Plenty Sunday Dinners, saying yes to Food Pantry volunteers using Bayside’s parking area to successfully raise money to buy turkeys for Washington County Food Pantries to have for Thanksgiving — Bayside Shop ‘n Save does it all.

It’s Thank you Thursday for the Area Interfaith Outreach Pantry and Emergency Services

It’s Thank you Thursday for the Area Interfaith Outreach Pantry and Emergency Services

It’s Thank you Thursday and today’s shout out of Mission Love goes to the Area Interfaith Outreach Pantry and Emergency Services.

AIO was started 30 years ago by a group of congregations in the Midcoast who came together around the idea of creating a supportive place for Knox County residents who need of food or energy assistance to go.

When Covid-19 prompted much less to-and-from traveling to Maine’s unbridged islands, AIO worked with Maine Seacoast Mission and Penobscot Island Air to keep the North Haven and Matinicus Island Food Pantries restocked and residents in need fed. When your food pantry is 22 miles at sea from the mainland, fresh food availability is all the more essential.

The Mission Island Health Services Director Sharon Daley said, “AIO and Penobscot Air have gone out of there way to make these food deliveries happen and are willing to think out side the box to do so. When fog came in Penobscot Air had to store the food in their freezers, transport it to a ferry, and load it on a truck. Getting food there is a team effort of AIO, Penobscot Air, and island volunteers.”

The Mission greatly appreciates AIO’s mission to respectfully and compassionately support those in need in Knox County with food and energy assistance.

It’s Thank you Thursday to Healthy Acadia

It’s Thank you Thursday to Healthy Acadia

It’s Thank you Thursday and today’s shout out of Mission Love goes to Healthy Acadia.

Search the Mission’s blog for Healthy Acadia mentions. You will see quickly how Maine Seacoast Mission’s many partnerships with HA touch our services and programs on land and sea in Washington and Hancock Counties, from help distributing food to local pantries, to hosting island telehealth smoking cessation programs.

Based in both Ellsworth and Machias, HA’s mission is to help build healthy communities through empowering people and organizations Downeast. In the broad sense of the term, Healthy Acadia’s helps people lead healthy lives.

We remember last summer, long before Covid-19, the delicious Downeast Table of Plenty spaghetti supper with salads and vegetable stir fried dishes prepared and served by teens and staff from HA’s Teen Ag Summer Program. Teen Ag is a wonderful program that introduces healthy foods to teens, and shows them how to grow healthy foods and prepare them for healthy eating.

HA is also a valued participant among 20 or so health care providers at the Mission hosted Health Fairs, where islanders are offered free hearing tests by an audiologist, blood sugar checks, information on breast self exam, hospice, domestic violence and home health care.

As the Mission looks forward to continuing our healthy partnerships with Healthy Acadia, we invite you to visit HA on their website or on Facebook.
