BAR HARBOR, ME — The Sunbeam V arrived in Stonington, ME on Thursday, September 13 for the boat’s annual routine maintenance. Missing the tide by just 15-minutes, the Sunbeam waited until the next day to be hauled up-and-out of the water and put in dry dock.

With the Sunbeam’s major refitting six months away, Captain Michael Johnson said the crew is focusing this maintenance on “the normal fresh exterior coat of paint and some plumbing work.” Also, the Sunbeam’s engine will have “a tune-up,” just as the family car engine has scheduled tune-ups, to “make sure everything’s within specification,” said Captain Johnson.

Sunbeam Steward Jillian is taking the lead on giving the boat interior a “deep cleaning” in dry dock.

Until the Sunbeam is back in service, the crew — Island Outreach Director Douglas Cornman, Island Health Director Sharon Daley, and Steward Jillian — will continue their work among communities on the Maine islands they serve, relying on island mail boats, water taxis, local island facilities, and Penobscot Island Air.

Even in dry dock, you can rely on the boat online calendar for following the Sunbeam crew’s activities.

R.H. Foster Team Wins Seacoast Mission’s Benefit Tennis Tournament

BAR HARBOR, ME — Congratulations to the R.H. Foster team for winning Maine Seacoast Mission’s 14th Annual Tennis Tournament on Saturday, September 8th, at the Northeast Harbor Tennis Club.

R.H. Foster broke the Small Animal Clinic’s record of winning the four previous tournaments. The EdGE team defeated Jock Williams Boat Yard in first semi final; R.H. Foster defeated Dead River. In the final, R.H. Foster narrowly defeated EdGE 17-15.

The tournament proceeds benefit the Mission’s EdGE (Ed Greaves Education) youth development program. The Mission’s EdGE runs after-school, in-school, and summer programs in Washington/Hancock Counties to give kids tools and resources to succeed in school and in life.

Assistant EdGE Director Isaac Marnik said, “From the EdGE perspective everything went great! EdGE students took part in the one-hour tennis clinic at the Bar Harbor Club. Students enjoyed a BBQ at the Mission’s Colket Center HQ, stayed overnight, and watched Saturday’s Tennis Tournament. They all had a great time and all want to play more tennis,” said Isaac Marnik.

Anna Silver, the Mission’s Assistant Development Director and tournament coordinator said the event raised $18,000 for the EdGE program. “Special thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers,” said Silver.

Editorial: In praise of ‘localism’
August 31, 2018 on Editorials, Opinion

About a year ago, the Maine Seacoast Mission honored this newspaper, its publisher Alan Baker and its founding editor Earl Brechlin with the organization’s Sunbeam Award.

Mission director Scott Planting noted that the paper, like the Mission, works to cultivate this localist energy.

“In this difficult time of failed public expectations, when thoughtful people wonder where to look for hope, I keep returning in my own mind to the thought of the renewal of rural communities,” Planting said, quoting Wendell Berry.

“But to be authentic, a true encouragement and a true beginning, this would have to be a revival accomplished mainly by the community itself. It would have to be done not from the outside by the instruction of visiting experts, but from the inside by the ancient rule of neighborliness, by the love of precious things, and by the wish to be at home.”
